Beat the dealer without going over 21.
The objective is not simply to reach 21. A player wins by finishing with a valid total higher than the dealer's, or by remaining in the game when the dealer exceeds 21. A player loses immediately after exceeding 21—called busting—even if the dealer later busts too.
A “blackjack” is normally an ace plus a ten-value card as the initial two-card hand. It is distinct from a three-card or longer total of 21 and traditionally pays more, making the exact blackjack payout one of the first rules to inspect.
02 · Hand values
Aces make the arithmetic flexible.
- Cards 2 through 9 count at face value.
- 10, jack, queen and king each count as 10.
- An ace counts as 1 or 11, whichever produces the strongest total without busting.
A hand with an ace currently counted as 11 is “soft”, such as ace–6 for soft 17. If an additional card would otherwise cause a bust, the ace can convert to 1. A hand without that flexibility is “hard”. Pair hands form a third decision category because they may be eligible to split.
If player and dealer finish with the same total, the hand is usually a tie, called a push, and the original stake is returned. A standard player blackjack may beat a dealer's ordinary three-card 21, but a dealer blackjack pushes a player blackjack.
03 · Sequence
How a round is dealt.
- Wagers close. Each occupied position receives cards. In many games the player cards are face up.
- The dealer shows an upcard. A second dealer card is face down in many hole-card games; in some formats it is not drawn until players finish.
- Blackjack checks occur. Procedures vary when the upcard is an ace or ten-value card. Insurance may be offered against an ace.
- Players act in order. Each hand is completed using the permitted decisions.
- The dealer completes the hand. The dealer follows fixed rules, usually drawing to 16 and standing on 17, with a table-specific rule for soft 17.
- Hands are settled. Remaining player totals are compared with the dealer and paid according to the posted schedule.
Dealer decisions are procedural, not strategic. The dealer cannot choose to stand early or chase a player total.
04 · Player decisions
Four core verbs shape the hand.

Insurance is mathematically a side bet on the dealer's hole card. For a player without additional composition information, it commonly carries a substantial house edge. “Even money” offered to a player blackjack against a dealer ace is mathematically the same insurance decision presented differently.
05 · Table rules
The name “blackjack” hides many price points.
Blackjack pays 3:2 or 6:5
A traditional 3:2 payout returns $15 profit on a $10 blackjack. A 6:5 payout returns $12. That seemingly small change increases the house edge by roughly 1.4 percentage points, depending on the rest of the rules.
Dealer stands or hits soft 17
Dealer standing on all 17s is generally more favourable to the player than the dealer hitting soft 17. Tables normally print “S17” or “H17” in their rules.
Decks and dealing depth
The number of decks, how far the shoe is dealt before shuffling, and whether cards are continuously shuffled affect composition. Fewer decks can be favourable when other rules remain equal, but other table terms can outweigh that effect.
Doubling and splitting
Rules may permit doubling on any first two cards or only selected totals, allow or prohibit doubling after a split, limit resplits, and restrict split aces to one additional card. These conditions alter both strategy and house edge.
Never assume a blackjack game follows the conditions described in a generic guide. A lower minimum does not necessarily mean a lower mathematical cost.
06 · History
From twenty-one to blackjack.
Games aiming at twenty-one were recorded in Europe centuries ago. Miguel de Cervantes referred to veintiuna (“twenty-one”) in a Spanish story written around the beginning of the seventeenth century. Related French games later became known as vingt-et-un.
The game travelled to North America, where rules and promotions evolved. The name “blackjack” is commonly linked to an early bonus payout for a specific combination involving the ace of spades and a black jack. That promotional hand disappeared, but the name remained.
As casinos formalised procedures in the twentieth century, multi-deck shoes, standard hand signals and surveillance practices spread. Mathematical analysis also changed public understanding. Roger Baldwin, Wilbert Cantey, Herbert Maisel and James McDermott published an early mathematically derived playing strategy in the 1950s. Edward O. Thorp's 1962 book Beat the Dealer brought card counting to a mass audience and accelerated rule changes and countermeasures.
Today, continuous shuffling machines, side bets and 6:5 payout tables show how the game continues to evolve commercially. The core contest remains recognisable, but the price can differ sharply.
07 · Basic strategy
A decision table, not a winning system.
Basic strategy is a mathematically derived set of hit, stand, double, split and surrender choices for each player hand against each dealer upcard under specified rules. It minimises the house advantage for those conditions. It does not forecast the next card or guarantee that a correctly played hand wins.
Strategy changes when rules change. Number of decks, dealer action on soft 17, surrender availability and doubling rules all matter. A chart created for one table may be imperfect for another. The broad logic is that the dealer's weak upcards allow more conservative play, while strong upcards often require a player to accept greater bust risk—but precise choices should come from a rule-matched chart.
The order of cards in a finite shoe also means decisions have conditional probabilities rather than one universal win chance. Strategy computers compare the expected value of each permitted action, including the possibility of pushes and blackjacks.
08 · Card counting
Composition tracking is real—and often misrepresented.
Because played cards are not immediately returned to a conventional shoe, the ratio of high to low cards can shift. Card-counting systems compress that information into a running count and, in multi-deck games, often a true count adjusted for remaining decks. A high-card-rich shoe can favour the player by increasing blackjack frequency and changing dealer bust probabilities.
This is not memorising every card, seeing hidden cards or winning every hand. An advantage, where it exists, is small and volatile and depends on rules, penetration, accurate play and variable stakes. 09 · Risk
Decision-making can create an illusion of control.
Blackjack's genuine strategy component makes it easy to overestimate personal influence. Correct play reduces expected cost; it does not control dealing order. Fast rounds, added hands and side bets rapidly increase total turnover. Track the total amount staked, not only the amount brought to the table.
