One result, many ways to describe it.
A roulette wheel contains numbered pockets coloured red, black and green. The dealer, traditionally called the croupier, spins the wheel in one direction and launches a small ball in the other. After losing momentum, the ball settles into one pocket. Every accepted wager is resolved against that single number.
European roulette has numbers 1–36 plus a single green 0, for 37 pockets. American roulette usually adds a second green pocket, 00, for 38. The extra pocket does not change most advertised payouts; it changes the chance of winning, which is why wheel type matters more than the décor around it.
A player can choose wagers with different volatility and can avoid higher-edge variants. No choice of number, staking pattern or observation can make the next fair spin predictable.
02 · Sequence
How a roulette round works.
- The table opens for wagers. Players place value chips on numbered squares or broader categories. At some physical tables, each player uses a distinct colour of roulette chip to establish ownership.
- The wheel and ball are set in motion. Bets may generally continue briefly while the ball travels.
- The croupier closes betting. Once “no more bets” is called, touching the layout is not permitted.
- The ball settles. The winning number and colour are announced and marked.
- Losing wagers are cleared; winners are paid. Payout figures usually state profit “to one”; the original stake is also returned on a win.
- The marker is removed and the next round begins. Players should wait until the croupier has completed settlement before placing new chips.
03 · The layout
Inside bets, outside bets and the same underlying edge.
“Inside” wagers sit on the numbered grid and cover small groups. “Outside” wagers sit around that grid and cover larger categories. Covering more numbers increases hit frequency but reduces the payout. On a standard wheel, most bets within the same variant carry the same house edge.

The green zero is not part of red/black, odd/even or 1–18/19–36. That is the design feature that gives the house an advantage on even-money bets despite their nearly half-and-half appearance.
04 · Variants
The zero changes the price.
European or single-zero roulette
The wheel contains 37 pockets and the usual house edge on standard wagers is 2.70%. The physical wheel order differs from the numerical order printed on the layout.
French roulette
French tables use the same single-zero wheel but may offer rules such as la partage (half of an even-money stake is returned when zero lands) or en prison (the stake is held for a subsequent spin). Applied to even-money wagers, these rules can reduce the effective edge to about 1.35%.
American or double-zero roulette
Adding 00 creates 38 outcomes. Standard bets then carry a house edge of about 5.26%. A special five-number wager covering 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3 is commonly even more expensive, with an edge of about 7.89%.
Modern venues may also use electronic terminals, automated wheels or unusual multi-zero formats. A familiar name does not guarantee familiar mathematics: check the wheel, rules and payout panel.
05 · History
From mathematical experiment to casino emblem.
Roulette's precise origin is often romanticised. Its ancestry includes European wheel games such as roly-poly, even-odd and biribi. A popular story connects the wheel to seventeenth-century mathematician Blaise Pascal and his work on perpetual motion; while Pascal experimented with wheel-like mechanisms, the modern game emerged through a longer synthesis rather than a single invention.
Forms recognisable as roulette appeared in eighteenth-century France. Early layouts commonly included both 0 and 00. In the nineteenth century, François and Louis Blanc popularised a single-zero game in Germany's spa casinos, giving their tables a lower mathematical edge than double-zero competitors. When gambling was restricted in parts of Europe, the Blanc operation became closely associated with Monte Carlo.
Across the Atlantic, the double-zero wheel became standard in the United States, while the single-zero form remained dominant in much of Europe. The twentieth century made the wheel a visual shorthand for casino culture. Electronic displays later added “hot” and “cold” number histories—descriptive records that can be psychologically compelling but do not alter independent probabilities on a fair wheel.
Australian casinos generally operate under state or territory regulation. Procedures and approved rules can vary, so a historic label such as “European” should never replace reading the actual table conditions.
06 · Mathematics
Why 35 to 1 is not fair odds.
On a single-zero wheel, a straight-up number wins once in 37 equally likely outcomes. Fair profit odds would therefore be 36 to 1. The table pays 35 to 1. That one-unit difference across 37 outcomes produces the house edge.
For a $10 straight-up wager, the theoretical expected loss is about $0.27 per spin. That does not describe what must happen on one spin: the actual result is usually a $10 loss or a $350 profit plus the returned stake. Expected value becomes meaningful as a comparison tool over large numbers of repeated wagers.
On a double-zero wheel the same 35-to-1 payout competes against 38 possible pockets:
Placing more simultaneous wagers may smooth or reshape outcomes, but it does not erase the embedded edge. If wagers overlap, the calculation becomes more complex while the underlying cost remains.
07 · Myths
A staking system cannot change the wheel.
The gambler's fallacy
After several reds, black may feel “due”. On an independent fair spin, the chance of black remains 18/37 on a single-zero wheel. The sequence is unusual as a story, but it has no memory and no influence on the next mechanical event.
Martingale and progression systems
Doubling after a loss changes the distribution of session outcomes, not the expected value of each wager. Table limits, finite funds and the possibility of long losing runs mean the required stake can rise quickly. Positive and negative progressions cannot convert a negative-expectation game into a positive one.
Hot numbers and dealer signatures
A past-results board reports history. It is not a forecast. Claims that a dealer can reliably target sectors should be treated sceptically under normal regulated procedures. A genuinely biased wheel is an equipment fault to be detected and corrected, not a realistic consumer strategy.
08 · At a physical table
Basic etiquette keeps settlement clear.
- Ask about chip values, minimums and rules before the round begins.
- Do not reach across the layout after “no more bets”.
- Keep drinks and personal items away from the betting surface.
- Wait until losing chips are cleared and winning wagers paid before placing the next round.
- Do not touch another person's chips or the winning-number marker.
- Never photograph people or tables without permission.
Etiquette is not strategy; it simply reduces disputes and lets the dealer account for every wager accurately.
09 · Risk
Roulette is fast, repetitive and entirely negative-expectation.
The simple decision cycle can encourage rapid repetition. “Near misses”, streak displays and the ease of increasing coverage may create an illusion of information or control. Slow down, count total money staked rather than only the final balance, and never chase a previous result.
